Cycling event raises millions for cancer research

Sue Powell is cycling for a number of causes, and all of them have the same goal - to reduce the amount of women who suffer from cancer. The British mother of two is taking part in a cycling challenge in Cuba later this year, and she didn't want to settle on just one charity, according to the Stroud News and Journal.

Powell decided to raise money for Breast Cancer Care, Jo's Cervial Cancer Trust and Ovarian Cancer Action. In order to raise the money, she is hosting a number of fundraisers such as a wine and cheese tasting and a sponsored pub run, according to the media outlet.

"I have reached an age now where my children are both grown-up so I thought I would like to do something a bit different," Powell told the news source. "I saw the cycle challenge advertised in a fitness magazine and I thought why not. It is not going to be easy but it is nice to have the opportunity to give something back."

The Woman V Cancer cycle ride takes place this October, and the 47-year-old is ready for the 250-mile, five day journey across Cuba. However, she is well aware it is not going to be easy.

"It is going to be tough but I am really looking forward to it. I wanted to do something where I am going to enjoy myself but I also wanted it to be for a good cause," Powell told the news outlet.

There are a number of charities across the globe attempting to increase awareness of breast, cervical and ovarian cancer. One of which, Grounds for Health, focuses on creating effective cervical cancer prevention and treatment methods and caters specifically to coffee-growing communities. Their goal is to decrease the number of women who suffer from cervical cancer.
