Leading toothpaste brands team up to highlight importance of dental health
Many medical professional cite tooth decay as the most prevalent chronic condition among children, and Crest and Oral-B recently teamed up in an effort to increase awareness of the importance of oral hygiene. The two organizations, along with dentist Dr. Jennifer Salzer, are offering tips on how parents can keep their kids' smiles healthy.
One of the most effective ways that parents can instill good brushing habits is to lead by example. If kids see their parents doing a good job brushing, flossing and rinsing, they are more likely to follow suit. Furthermore, encouraging youngsters to brush in front of a mirror will help them see spots they might have missed otherwise.
"Cavities are caused by decay that can occur when foods containing carbohydrates or sugars become trapped in the grooves of the teeth and between teeth," Salzer said. "It is important for kids to brush, floss and rinse daily to help maintain a healthy mouth and prevent cavities from forming."
Dental health is a big issue among youngsters. According to the American Academy of Pediatric Dentistry, 40 to 50 percent of children will be affected by tooth decay by the time they reach the age of 5.
